November 9, 2007—Merck announced that is has offered $4.85 billion to settle 27,000 lawsuits filed by people claiming injuries after taking Vioxx.

Vioxx was removed from the market in September 2004 after several studies revealed that the drug was associated with a substantially greater risk of heart attacks and strokes.

What is Vioxx?
Vioxx (rofecoxib) is a COX-2 inhibitor commonly prescribed to patients suffering from arthritis, acute pain, and painful menstrual cycles.

Did the FDA recall Vioxx?
No. Vioxx was voluntarily withdrawn from the market by its manufacturer. Although the FDA was investigating reports of cardiovascular problems, it did not force the manufacturer to recall the drug.

What should I do if I am taking Vioxx?
You should immediately contact your physician to discuss your health and alternative medications.

Can I still purchase Vioxx?
No. Pharmacists are no longer permitted to dispense the medication as a result of the withdrawal.
